Journey

Weather forecasts with a purpose

The research
A mixture of large and small scaled research (questionnaire, interviews, cultural probes and usability tests) have helped me conclude that we only have basic knowledge of the weather, which is not enough to understand a complete forecast. The lack of this information often leads to the creation of made-up definitions, which often leaves the person disappointed when the forecast has been misinterpreted. I have combined my research and knowledge on this topic and created a concept weather app called ‘Journey’ that allows people to create accurate expectations based on the predicted weather.

Accurate expectations in a glance. One of the reasons why people prefer minimalistic weather apps is because they simply just want to know if the sun will shine. These apps display the temperature and iconography largely to give the users what they want. However, to give an accurate expectation of the weather, they need more than just the temperature and sleek visuals. Weather measurements such as air pressure and humidity are often overlooked, while they actually have a big impact on our day to day lives. In Journey, only relevant weather data are shown at a glance. If there are no temperature interfering factors, the app will not show those measurements. Doing this helps the user create more focus on what’s actually important.

Accurate expectations with just a glance.

For the everyday commuter, the provided information at a glance is more than enough to create an expectation for the day. And for some, more detail is required. While popular weather apps often provide either too little or too much information, Journey has found a middle ground. People that enjoy more data can receive in-depth information by clicking on the forecast. The testers of the app's prototype enjoyed the fact that the app packs a large amount of information, but yet keeps it compact and easy to scan on the go.

Plan activities based on the forecast.

Ever planned an outdoor activity in advance that has been affected by a sudden weather change? Journey offers the user a weather calendar for the next 365 days based on historical weather data. This helps understand what the average weather is on a specific date. As much as the provided historical forecasts are not set in stone, it still leaves the user with an approximate estimation. The user can create activities on selected dates through the native calendar app, which will also be kept up to date in case any weather changes occur.
